Paving & Driveways: Plan The Work And Find Help

Compare driveway paving and repairs with base condition, drainage, material choices, access, curing instructions, local approvals, and limits on excavation and cleanup.

A driveway proposal should explain why the surface is failing before recommending another layer. Photograph puddles, settling, cracks, edges, and areas where vehicles turn. Tell the contractor about drainage toward the house and planned changes to parking or access so those concerns are included in the design.

Distinguish Surface Work From Reconstruction

Ask whether the proposal is patching, resurfacing, or removing and rebuilding the driveway. Each assumes a different condition below the surface. Request an explanation of how the existing base was evaluated and what could change after excavation. A cosmetic surface treatment should not be presented as proof that underlying drainage or settlement has been resolved.

Compare Quantities and Elevations

Specify the area, materials, preparation, excavation, proposed layer details, compaction, edge treatment, and final drainage direction. Ask how the finished driveway meets garage floors, steps, sidewalks, and the street. Include removal, disposal, utility protection, cleanup, and landscape restoration. Agree how unforeseen unsuitable material will be documented and priced.

  • Which problem will the proposed work solve?
  • Where will runoff go after the surface is changed?
  • When can vehicles, deliveries, and snow-removal equipment use the finished surface?

Specify Drainage and Seasonal Work Limits

Ask how the design handles runoff without directing it toward buildings, public walkways, or neighboring land. Soil movement, repeated freezing, intense heat, and heavy vehicles may affect preparation and material choices. Have the contractor explain installation and curing limits for the selected system, including what weather would delay work. Check with the road authority before changing a curb cut or work near the public right-of-way. Arrange vehicle access during closure, utility locating before excavation, and protection of nearby irrigation. Agree how concealed base failures will be documented before additional work is approved.

Questions Homeowners Ask

Is an overlay always cheaper overall?

Compare whether it suits the existing condition and how long unresolved problems might remain. A lower initial price is not a useful comparison if the scopes address different causes.

Should sealing be part of the same contract?

Ask whether it is appropriate for the chosen material, when the manufacturer or contractor recommends it, and whether it is included or a separate future service.
